The Baby Whisperer by Tracy Hogg – Book Review

As I sat in my hospital bed for 5 days recovering from an emergency c-section after the birth of my first born, I spent a lot of time reading through Secrets of the Baby Whisperer (or The Baby Whisperer as lots call it).  I had taken it into the hospital with me thinking that I might find time to flip to some important bookmarked pages if I found time. The one thing that surprised me most during those first few days post birth, was the amount of time that I found myself with. Secrets of the Baby Whisperer got a good workout!

But, I will never forget my favorite midwife, commenting on my reading material. “You should be reading your baby, not a book love”. (more…)

How Much Sleep Should Baby Get?

How much sleep should you baby be getting in a 24 hour period?

While babies will vary in how much day sleep and night sleep they are getting, they usually all average out to about the same amount of sleep in a 24 hour period. So, if you have a great night sleeper, you might find that they only have short or infrequent naps during the day. Or, if you have a great day time napper, you might have issues with night sleeping, or a baby that goes down quite late at night. (more…)

Sleep Schools

A sleep school is a place where you can take your baby to get help with either overnight sleep, naps, or both. Sleep school is often the last resort for a really tired mom who has tried everything else and doesn’t know where to go next.

Contrary to popular opinion, a sleep school is not a place where you take your baby and let them ‘cry it out’ until they sleep. And while a lot of schools do use ‘cry it out’  and controlled crying methods, a lot do not. (more…)

How Much Night Sleep Should Baby Get?

How long babies sleep overnight varies quite significantly from baby to baby, and when they finally sleep through the night will also vary significantly.

In this article is a graph that will show you averages of how long a baby will sleep overnight.  You will see that in the early months the number of hours is very low, this is because baby still needs to be fed quite often. As they grow older they require less overnight feeds and the number of hours of uninterrupted sleep will lengthen. (more…)
