In this article we look at the typical 10 month old and what their days look like.

Most 10 month olds:

  • Will be sleeping through the night
  • Will be sleeping for 11-12 hours at night
  • Will be taking 2 naps per day; a morning nap and an afternoon nap
  • Will have on average 2-4 hours of sleep during the day
  • Will be eating 3 solid meals per day
  • Will be having 3-4 milk feeds per day
  • Are more flexible and forgiving if their naps are a little late
  • Some babies start to want to drop their morning or afternoon sleep at this age (however this is not very common)

The examples below of eating and sleeping schedules for 10 month olds is just a guide. There are almost identical to the 9 month old routines.

You will notice as your baby grows older that their routine doesn’t change as regularly, they may stay with the same routine for a few months at a time now.

Keep in mind that they below are just examples and not what every baby should be conforming to. Tweak to suit your lifestyle and baby’s sleep needs, just make sure you’re not keeping baby up too long between naps which will avoid over tired babies and the resulting night time sleep issues (see recommended “awake times” for younger babies).

This first routine is a fairly typical schedule for a 10 month old. They are having 2 predictible naps per day and 3 substantial meals.

    Awake Time:
    2 – 4 hours*
    Feeds:
3 meals per day, 1 hour after milk feed
    Naps Per Day:
    2

  • 7:00 Awake & milk feed
  • 8:00 Solids – breakfast
  • 9:00 Nap
  • 10:30 Awake
  • 11:00 Milk feed
  • 12:00 Lunch
  • 1:30 Nap
  • 3:30 Awake
  • 4:00 Milk feed
  • 5:00 Dinner
  • 6:30 Bedtime routine & top up milk feed
  • 7:00 Bed

The next routine is similar to the first, but adapted for a baby that wakes slightly earlier.

    Awake Time:
    2 – 4 hours*
    Feeds:
3 meals per day, 1 hour after milk feed
    Naps Per Day:
    2

  • 6:30 Awake & milk feed
  • 7:30 Solids – breakfast
  • 8:45 Nap
  • 9:45 Awake
  • 10:30 Milk feed
  • 11:30 Solids – lunch
  • 1:00 Nap
  • 3:30 Awake and milk feed
  • 4:30 Solids – dinner
  • 6:00 Bedtime routine
  • 6:30 Top up milk feed and bed

The last routine is a typical day for a 45 minute napper. Despite being rough on parents, 45 minute nappers actually have more consistent routines than longer nappers because you always know exactly how long their going to sleep for! It will be easier to create a time-based routine, if this is what you prefer. If not, just go with the flow!

    Awake Time:
    2 – 4 hours*
    Feeds:
3 meals per day, 1 hour after milk feed
    Naps Per Day:
    2-3 / 45 minute napper

  • 7:00 Awake & milk feed
  • 8:00 Solids – breakfast
  • 9:00 Nap
  • 9:45 Awake
  • 11:00 Milk feed (morning tea)
  • 12:00 Lunch
  • 1:00 Nap
  • 1:45 Awake
  • 3:30 Milk feed
  • 4:30 Dinner
  • 5:00 Catnap or walk in stroller during fussy phase (tired, but too early to go to bed)
  • 6:00 Bedtime routine
  • 6:30 – 7:00 Milk top up & bed

* Awake time will vary depending upon the time of day. The morning wake time is still the shortest of the day, and may be as short as 1.5 to 2 hours. Awake times will extend as the day progresses, with the late afternoon (before bed time) awake period being the longest of the day.
